The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy

Guess who’s coming to dinner?

The delightfully dark family based on the iconic Charles Addams cartoons,
that’s who.

The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy will open on August 21 at Highlands Lakeside Theatre in Sebring. The show was created by an award-winning team that includes authors Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), and composer-lyricist Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party). Directed by veteran director and performer Amanda Mercer, the production promises to enchant audiences with humor, an original story, song and dance, and all your favorite Addams Family characters.

A show that embraces the wackiness (and wickedness) in every family, features every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. “This is an antidote for stressful times. A silly story with great songs, amazing performers, and laughs in every scene,” said Theatre Manager Vanessa Logsdon. Behind all the dark humor is a surprisingly sweet story about a parent struggling to accept that his oldest daughter is growing up and moving on.

Taking the weirdness a small wild step further, on Wednesdays we wear black. Everyone dressed in black at each of the Wednesday performances will be entered into a drawing for a small prize.

The production stars many well-known HLT actors: Jennifer Westergom (Morticia); Marcus Conerly (Gomez); Cassady Hitt (Wednesday); Brady Spencer (Pugsley); Tony Toler (Uncle Fester); Tracy Schuknecht (Grandmama); Gary Johnson (Lurch); Elianna Hagen (Cousin It); Aslan Smith (Lucas); and Dawn Smith and Mike McMillian (Mal and Alice Beineke.)

A spirited chorus of ancestors from past generations and locales also haunt the stage with their “all together ooky” singing and dancing. The ancestors include: Alysia Anders, Hunter Cummins, Madyson D’Espies, Sydney Hitt, Eva McCall, Reese McCall, Hailey McDonough, TJ Mercer, Corin Smith, Rilan Smith, Tina To, and Hailey Waltman.

The play runs August 21 through September 6,2020, with performances on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 pm, and matinees on both Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 pm. Tickets start at $20. Call 863-382-2525 or visit the Box Office at 356 West Center Av, Sebring. Box Office hours are Monday – Friday, 10 AM – 2 PM, and one hour before each performance. While not graphic or overt, adult themes in this musical comedy make it unsuitable for some children.

The production team includes Amanda Mercer (Director and Costume Design); Tom Staik (Assistant Director and Costume Design); Candice Anders (Music Director and Sound Design/Tech); Jillian Febres (Production Coordinator); Hannah Summers (Set Art); Laura Wade (Lighting Design); Mike McMillian (Set); Kevin Hacker (Stage Manager); Jen Reed, Camille Shaffer, Cassady Hitt, Jennifer Westergom (Choreography); Sydney Hitt (Choreography and Co Stage Manager); Rhonda Wilson (Special Projects and Sound Design/Tech); Kathy Hunt (Props Mistress); Kris Juve, Olivia Scott, Mary Margaret Staik, Kathy Helmond (Wardrobe Assistants); Thor Knutson (Special Effects); Jet Hansen (Lighting Tech); Anna Schmidt (Spot Light); and Michael Wilkinson, TJ Mercer (Stage Hands.)

“It’s weird and unpredictable. It’s absurd at times and always keeps the audience on its toes as it moves quickly from one silly antic to the next, but its always funny and also strangely sweet at times. ‘The Addams Family’ proves that the macabre, medieval torture and a preoccupation with death can be a fun time for the whole family.” Hannah Murdock, Deseret News.
